Restaurant Review - KAT'S SUSHI

Sushi has to be one of my all time favorite foods. I can have it several times a week and not get tired of eating it.

I've eaten sushi from Kat's Sushi while I was working on the TV show "Lost". I had always wanted to visit the restaurant as I had heard so many good things about it. So while I was on that side of town, my husband and I decided to go.

Kat's is located on the makai side of King, just after where King and Kapiolani starts. When you see the sign, turn right and go up the very steep ramp and park.

We went there a little after 1 PM. It's a cute place with only 4 tables and a sushi bar. As we sat down and looked around, we tried to see what other people had ordered. This one linebacker type guy had a huge assortment of nigiri sushi in front of him. He had a system down.....pick up sushi with chopsticks, dab in shoyu, place in mouth and enjoy. He was doing the All-You-Can-Eat sushi and he was getting his money's worth. Our waiter told us later that he was a regular who know the rules of "you have to eat all the rice". But for $20.95, I think it was worth it.

As I wasn't sure I could do justice to $20.95 worth of sushi, I decided to have the Deluxe assortment. You could certainly tell it was good quality sushi just from the texture and smell of the rice. It was just right for me. My husband decided to have their chicken katsu. It came with miso soup, rice, mac/potato salad and vegetable tempura. Their sweet/sour katsu sauce was good. I got to sample the vegetable tempura with it's light batter. I really liked that. My husband thought the food was ono.

We got to talk with Ted Kim, the owner of Kat's. He's a great guy with some even greater stories of the people that come in. He told us about when some of the sumo wrestlers would come in with their entourage. They would bring their own special stools to sit on. They had to call ahead so that he could make extra rice to feed them all.

Kat's Sushi has been in business for over 30 years. It's named after the original owner and Ted decided to keep the name when he bought the business. It's a great place to go for lunch. The lunch menu has a lot of variety. Dinner is only sushi.

I'm planning on going back and bringing my son with me. He likes sushi as much as I do. I'm curious to see if he can do justice to the All-You-Can-Eat sushi!

Chinese Chicken Salad Everyone Loves!!

I just have to tell you about this Chinese Chicken Salad. People absolutely LOVE IT! When ever I get invited to a potluck, this is the most requested dish that I make. And no matter how much I make, it's never enough. I usually take home a very empty bowl. (I once caught someone using lettuce from another salad trying to "soak" up the dressing left in the bowl).

But I really like this salad for another reason. People identify me with this salad. It is really so funny. I've been introduced to people as "she's the one that makes that Chinese Chicken Salad".

I just got a phone call from a friend that moved to Utah about 5 years ago. We had also moved to another house in that time as well. I hadn't heard from her, but kept updated through mutual friends. She couldn't find my recipe and really wanted to make it. So through those same mutual friends, she got my number and called me. And she's not the first one!

I love that this recipe keeps me in touch with people. I've had people that I haven't heard from in YEARS call me. It's always a special treat to talk to them and catch up. So here's the recipe. Make the dressing the night before so the flavor really have a chance to meld together. Let me know if you enjoy it too!

Chinese Chicken Salad

1 c. vegetable oil
1/3 c. white vinegar
2 T. lemon juice

Blend all ingredients in a blender until smooth. Chill overnight.

2 cups cooked chicken, shredded
1 head ice burg lettuce
1 head romaine lettuce

Tear lettuce and cut cabbage into bite size pieces. Crush wun ton in pieces. Toss all together with chicken. Pour dressing over everything and toss to coat. Serves 8.
